I’m a full time guide and have fished with several high end rods over the years. After fishing the Gunnison rod, made by San Juan Rod Works, I have put two of these rods, 6 weights, in my boat. I received my new SJRodworks Gunnison 9’ 5wt and put it though its paces on the San Juan this week. I was concerned that the Gunnison might be to fast a rod for me, since I was used to a medium action rod, and I fish mostly dry flies. But I have to say it was perfect! Just right for casting in windy and not so windy conditions, and perfect for working in the fat rainbows and browns on the Juan. It’s a great rod, beautifully made, casts like butter, and an excellent value proposition to boot.

Fished SanJuan Rodworks “GUNNISON” 5 wt. rod on the upper Gunnison River (Almont, Colorado to the town of Gunnison, Colorado) June 13, 2021. Threw dries all evening from anchored/floating in my drift boat. Very happy with performance of new rod. Lifts line well; fast action shoots an accurate presentation where intended. Great workmanship. Can’t wait to try a 6 wt. “GUNNISON “ with dry/dropper rig.

What great rods at a great price! I purchased 3 rods back in March. We have 8wt Gunnisen and Fryingpans for momma and I to fish Snook and Red Fish. The kids have a 6wt fryingpan to learn and enjoy the water with us. The price per rod allowed me to buy 3 for the family instead of 1 for me. I paired all 3 with Cheeky pre-spooled reels. Both have performed really well and taken our saltwater environment without issue. And let's just say the kids aren't as easy on them as my wife and I are..... (They've already used the extra tip that came with the rod...) Well worth the dollars spent.

I recently purchased a Gunnison 9' 6wt fly rod, and have used it on two trips to the San Juan River. I have been pleased with the quality of the rod, and the "feel" of the rod in my hand. I recently picked up a Gunnison 8 weight to throw streamers and large dries.  I was little worried that this rod would not throw like my high end rods, I am not worried anymore.  This is my new favorite rod.  It is stiff enough to throw long casts in the wind but it also has some feel.  Great work SJR

I'm not a seasoned fly fisherman, but was taught by my best friend that passed about 10 years ago. He left me his Scott Rod and beautiful Ross Reel which he used to use off the Lake Fork of the Gunnison in both public and private waters. I finally made a trip to Taos NM to fish the headwaters of the Rio Grande this past year. I took my Scott Rod and my San Juan Rod Works Rod, after going through the suggested rod options. We were in about 2-3 feet of mid-moving water and casting dry flies and nymphs in about 4-6 feet of water. Perhaps it was my old friend in my head or just a beautiful day on the water. I landed 4 with my Scott and another 6 with my San Juan Rod. I found them both to be quality rods and very easy to cast in light breeze conditions with zero restriction in terms of space. Think I'll make the transition to fish with the my San Juan Rod Works Rod on the San Juan River this year. Thank you for taking the time to help me select the rod that was best suited to my needs.
