Fly Fishing Rod

A great fly fishing rod should feel like an extension of your arm, not a tool you're wrestling with. The right rod makes casting more intuitive, presentations more accurate, and days on the water more enjoyable. We started San Juan Rodworks because we were convinced that fly fishing rods at this performance level didn't need to carry a $600 or $800 price tag.

About Our Fly Fishing Rods

We build three rod models, each named after a waterway with meaning to us here in the Southwest. The Gunnison is a fast-action rod built for anglers who want distance, punch, and authority in the cast. It handles wind, larger flies, and bigger fish without complaint. The Fryingpan is a medium-fast action rod with a smooth, forgiving feel that suits technical trout fishing and more delicate presentations. The Conejos is purpose-built for Euro nymphing, with the sensitivity and length that style of fishing demands. Every rod ships with two tip sections. A broken tip doesn't have to end your trip when you've got a spare already in the tube. Each rod is also covered by our No-Fault, No-Hassle Lifetime Warranty. Break it, and we'll take care of it.

FAQs

Q: What action fly rod should I start with?

Medium-fast action rods are the most forgiving and versatile for beginners. They work well for most trout fishing situations and help develop proper casting technique.

Q: What does line weight mean on a fly rod?

Line weight refers to the weight of the fly line the rod is designed to cast. A 5-weight rod is the most common starting point for trout fishing.

Q: What is a Euro nymphing rod?

Euro nymphing rods are longer and more sensitive than standard rods, designed for a technique that uses minimal fly line and relies on feel to detect strikes.
